Tidal Beacon
The Tidal Beacon is a striking 60-foot-tall kinetic art installation created by renowned artist Ned Kahn, situated at Queen's Marque in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This dramatic piece celebrates the natural environment and maritime history of the region, designed to interact dynamically with the tides and weather of Halifax Harbour. As the tides rise and fall, the internal lighting of the structure shifts, culminating in a spectacular 12-minute light show at both high and low tides.
The installation captures the fluidity of the ocean, using a combination of light, sound, and motion to merge the natural elements of Halifax Harbour with the urban landscape. The illuminated crescendos and rotating beacons offer a mesmerising visual experience, highlighting the maritime influence that shapes the region. Serving as both an environmental artwork and a tide clock, the Tidal Beacon makes Halifax’s strong connection to the sea visible and tangible.
This project is a testament to the power of public art in blending design, technology, and nature, offering a transformative experience for visitors while honouring Halifax’s deep maritime roots. The Tidal Beacon stands as a new icon on the Halifax waterfront, inviting the public to engage with the natural rhythms of the ocean in a uniquely artistic way.
