Coca Cola
On 16 September 2016, one of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks—the Coca-Cola sign at Kings Cross—was re-illuminated following a nine-month refurbishment. This project introduced energy-efficient, RGB-controllable LED pixel neon, revitalising the beloved sign while maintaining its original character that had defined the Sydney skyline for over 40 years.
The project brief called for a “like-for-like replacement,” ensuring that the updated sign retained its classic aesthetic. 1129 RGB LED neon fixtures were chosen, offering a traditional look combined with modern energy efficiency and durability. This approach ensured the sign’s vibrant legacy could continue with a reduced environmental impact.
The updated sign features 17,880 RGB pixels spread across 2.2 km of LED neon, all controlled through LEDCTRL software. This powerful yet user-friendly control system allows for precise programming, enabling dynamic lighting displays that adapt to various events and celebrations. The data signals are transmitted to 180 controllers using approximately 4.2 km of networking cable, ensuring seamless operation.
Measuring 40 meters wide and 12 meters high, the Coca-Cola sign is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. This revitalisation represents a blend of heritage preservation and modern technology, keeping the iconic red glow shining over Kings Cross with 60% less power than before, significantly reducing its energy footprint.
The new sign has become a sustainable symbol for the city, reflecting Coca-Cola’s commitment to reducing energy use while continuing to celebrate Sydney’s vibrant nightlife. The LED upgrade preserves the character and visibility of the original design while offering the flexibility to create a dynamic and engaging visual experience for both residents and visitors.
