Burnley Tunnel Pacemaker Lighting: Enhancing Traffic Flow with Dynamic LED Solutions

As part of the 2022/2023 upgrades to the Burnley Tunnel by tunnel operator Transurban, Clear Control was engaged to deliver an innovative Pacemaker Lighting solution. This dynamically controlled lighting system features coloured LED bands that progress through the tunnel, subtly encouraging drivers to accelerate when it is safe to do so.

Since the introduction of the Pacemaker Lighting in March 2023, initial results have shown significant benefits:

Morning peak (7-10 am) traffic moving 15% faster.
Afternoon peak (4-7 pm) traffic improving by 6.5%.
Overall traffic volume increased by 5%.
Clear Control provided comprehensive design consultancy services for the project, including:

Producing 3D video renders of proposed designs using Unreal Engine, integrated with LEDCTRL for precise DMX lighting control.
Designing the control system, including wiring schematics and leveraging the existing tunnel network backbone.
Offering fixture selection advice and custom software development to introduce new Pacemaker lighting functionality and integrate it with the Operations Management and Control System (OMCS).
On-site commissioning, training, and handover to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.
